*The purpose of the piano sessions is to get attuned to the singers' voices, their pacing and interpretations, and to get a little practice before leading the instrumental ensemble later on. These sessions will be taught by Maestro David Štech, artistic director of New York Conducting Institute, and will focus on getting each participant comfortable in accompanying the singers in the recitatives. If time allows, auditors may be invited to participate. Prior to this session, each conductor must know the translation and pronunciation of the singers' texts. Also important is to know the plot of the opera and the function of the scene in context. Participants are highly encouraged to watch a video of the opera or of the scene to get a sense of the dramatic intent.

†Rehearsal technique is of near equal importance to gesture, but is rarely taught. Maestro Nadler will rehearse the ensemble and demonstrate rehearsal technique. Students will actively observe and take notes. He may choose to explain his methods during the session or after. A question-and-answer session will follow, along with any further explanation the Maestro deems important.

‡Maestro Nadler will lead the class in a critical analysis of The Art of Conducting. Topics to be discussed will include:
  • Style and Clarity: Analysis of gesture and presence.
  • Demeanor and Personality: effect on the orchestra players.
  • Continuing the traditions: which traditions and why?
  • Rehearsal styles from the past and their implications for our era.
  • What is useful to emulate in this video for today's conductor?
  • Orchestras of the past vs. today.
