International Women's Conducting Workshop 2018
with Maestro Janna Hymes

New York Conducting Institute (NYCI) is pleased to present the International Women’s Conducting Workshop with Maestro Janna Hymes, January 6-12th, 2018. Up to sixteen conductors will be selected as full participants, and up to ten auditors will be invited as observers. Participants will receive 76 minutes of podium time over the course of the seven days, taught by Maestro Janna Hymes. These will include one session with sextet, one session with chamber orchestra, and two sessions with full orchestra. All podium sessions will be digitally recorded . During this intensive workshop, Maestro Hymes will also be leading the following sessions:
- Two sessions with intensive score analysis and study, in which participants and auditors will have the extraordinary opportunity to go learn from her experience and insights. Participants are highly encouraged to be well prepared and ask questions.
- Speed Networking: small group discussions with established women conductors: Teresa Cheung. Susan Deaver, Pat Glunt and Eve Queler.
- Getting the Gig (Part 1): Auditions, Interviews, and Résumés
- How to present the most polished version of yourself
- Presenting yourself with authenticity and confidence
- Getting the Gig (Part 2): Managers and Publicists — representatives from renowned agencies and established organizations including:
- Elaine Carroll — Chief Executive Officer, New Haven Symphony Orchestra
- Patrick Chamberlain — Director of Artistic Planning, New Jersey Symphony
- Laura Grant — Founder, Grant Communications; Publicity Consultant, The Juilliard School
- Bill Reinert — William Reinert Associates, Inc.
- This session will cover:
- What they do, why we need them, and what they need from us
- Why, when, and how to get representation
Here are some additional features for our unique women's conducting workshop this year:
- All Participants and auditors will be attending a New York Philharmonic Concert, a rehearsal and a Q & A session with Susanna Mälkki
- Full participants will have an individual video review session with Maestro Hymes.

How to apply
In order to complete the application form, the following are required:
- Video Clips of your own conducting. (for full-participant applications only)
- List links to online video clips including title of the piece, length of the excerpt, ensemble name, and any additional information needed in order to access (at least 10 minutes, but not more than 30 minutes in total)
- Minimum ONE letter of reference (for full-participant applications only)
- We require at least one recommendation letter from someone familiar with the applicant's professional work and/or from someone who has seen the applicant conduct. Upon your submission, our application system will send an automatic invitation e-mail to the applicant's reference(s) which provides instructions on how to submit the letter(s) of recommendation. Letters must be submitted/sent directly by the recommenders. Photocopies, scans, and forwarded e-mails submitted by the applicant will not be accepted.
- Letters of recommendation must be completed by October 25th, 2017, the application deadline, in order to ensure that they will be received and considered. Please email us if there is any issue regarding recommendation letters.
- Résumé
- We accept the following formats: pdf, doc, docx, txt, rtf, html. One letter-size page maximum
- Application fee $35 until October 25th, 2017. After this date, $50. (non-refundable, must pay online via your application form in order to complete your application)

Applications are being accepted now and will be reviewed starting on October 25th, 2017. Applications received after October 25th will be reviewed and processed on a space-available basis. If the class is full, applications will be considered for Auditor status only.
If accepted as an Auditor, she may be added to the waiting list for Full Participant status, with the discretion of Maestro Janna Hymes and NYCI. If a Full-Participant must later cancel, tuition will be refunded (minus non-refundable fees) only if a suitable replacement is found.

Admission decisions sent by email. For those who have applied for a tuition scholarship award, you will be notified of the amount upon acceptance.
Decisions for applications received after October 22nd, 2017, will be sent within 5 business days.
$500 non-refundable deposit due within 10 days upon acceptance for full participants
November 15th, 2017
For Auditors and Full-Participants, an early tuition payment discount of $35 is offered if entire tuition is paid in full by this date
December 1st, 2017
For Auditors and Full-participants: Tuition Balance due

Financial Assistance
One of our goals is to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent a talented musician from attending our workshop. We encourage students needing assistance to seek out external sources of tuition support in addition to the scholarship awards from the NYCI.
Tuition Scholarships
